The story is a "Comedy of Manners" because it blatantly makes fun of the Victorian society. It's funny because of it's absurdity and strangeness but when looked down upon closely, it tells the story of a real society that is so caught up with it's own righteousness and how they act ridiculous. Wilde is satirizing all of the hypocrites within the Victorian era.
